Maskne

As if 2020 hasn’t been difficult enough and with news worsening as we head into winter, a new challenge is emerging for some, which, whilst not life threatening can have an impact on one’s way of life.

Mask Acne or Maskne as it is being called, is a breakout of spots and redness, which is experienced after wearing a mask. Many of our patients have already presented with symptoms, namely breakouts when they have previously enjoyed clear skin.

If you do think you might be suffering with this, you can very quickly self-diagnose, as you will only have the spots in the area where you wear the mask, i.e. the lower half of your face beneath the eyes.

Unlike hormonal acne, there are two primary causes for these breakouts. Firstly, the skin can suffer damage from the constant rubbing from the mask, which, in turn means bacteria and dirt, as well as sweat and moisture that easily build up behind the mask, can get under the surface of the skin and clog up pores. Secondly, the restriction of airflow caused by the mask means that skin cells that you would usually shed during the day are trapped and once again create blocked pores.

There are three simple steps you can take to address the issue and help prevent breakouts:

  1. Washing your mask after every use to prevent the build-up of bacteria
  2. Wash your face to remove trapped moisture and dead skin cells
  3. Choose your mask wisely – a gentle material such as silk is better than a man-made harsher fabric and ensure that it fits, so it is not so loose it rubs nor so tight that it creates a build of build-up heat.

However, bad skin can be a cause of significant anxiety for many, so if you are suffering, you can also take steps to treat your skin…
